You may remember our announcement for this year’s TBBF workshops in April and May. They covered all disciplines, to include Art. Now, if you’ve never been to an Art workshop, you may ask yourself „what is the program like / do I learn how to dance with racket and ball / do I need to be a dancer, an acrobat or both / do I learn a choreography / how do I build my skills / …?
Well, in a way you can answer all the above questions with „yes“ – but also with „it depends“. Kind of vague? Why don’t you have a look at the following workshop impressions. I’m sure you’ll be able to answer these questions and more yourself at the end…
Get your footing and turn
You want to start out on the right foot. Turning around your axis is one of the basic moves and not only in Art. You need to be in balance in order not to „drift off“🔃. Round and round it goes 🔄️…
Turn and walk in stride
Just spinning on your axis makes you dizzy🥴. But on a more serious note – you want to walk in rhythm to the music🕺. How do you do that? Well, you combine your steps with spinning, turning and moving your arms, your racket and ball to a choreography.
You don’t just turn and walk – you do it with grace
It’s not hopping and not exactly marching either. After all, this is not the military 🫡 So let’s add some components that make our moves a little more graceful. And no, being artistic in the process is not necessarily required. But one step at a time 🚸
And now add a dash of ball artistry
Now you got you arms, legs, racket and ball sorted while your moving👣. Let’s take this one step further and add some artistic elements to our racket and ball handling🏸.
And here comes our choreography
Now let’s put it all in one big bucket, give it a hearty stir 🫕and off you go. This type of choreography not only looks good, you can also find it embedded in the Duans. Master it and you can achieve one of the certified levels🏅.
And it doesn’t stop there – next comes dexterity
What would Art be without dexterity elements? Well, only one side of the coin🪙. So let’s bring the other side into focus. Don’t worry, you don’t need circus skills🎪. Let’s just start with a few elements.
We all love synergy, right? Let’s make this fun…
If you’re practicing alone, we gave you some ideas of how to create a choreography. So but what if you’re practicing with others👯? Why not add some elements that train your concentration, coordination and bring a smile to your face😊?
Back to our choreography – let’s get tricky
Art is such a versatile discipline – coordination, grace, artistry and … tricks🪄. Dance all you want with racket and ball but tricks are what add the amazement. Let’s get the ball rolling 🛼 with a couple of them.
No card up your sleeve but a catch behind your back
The more you want to up your tricks, the more you need to sharpen your senses🔪. Know your body and especially feel 🫰 where the ball is. Even if you can’t see it. How that works – well let’s sneak a peak…
Let’s add a twist of eye-dizzying
Where are racket and ball😕? One is flying while the other is spinning around your body. Unfortunately, you can’t see the amazed eyes surrounding you 😎 at the same time you’re performing this move…
Some more unconventional ball catching
Pushing down on a falling ball🎢and „stabbing“ backwards in the process do not seem to qualify for a catching move . And, yet, here you go🤨.
Ball back under control – here come your arms
With all those options of catching a ball, it’s time to shift the focus back to what we can do with it🍃, once it’s back on your racket. Now, this move is not only tricky to learn but also tricky for anybody watching you 👀 to follow.
The puzzling 8
You would think that the „8“ is a rather straight forward number🎱 and figure respectively: 2 (stacked) circles⭕ – that’s it, right? Well yes but see for yourself how tricky this number can get, when you „draw it on the ground“, with your racket and ball.
Circling synergy
And back to performing with a partner – you are „splitting 🥟 up the two circles of the 8“, so to speak. While you are circling the ball, your partner is following suit, so that you’re both circling your balls clockwise or counter-clockwise 🕧.
Rounding things up
And since the „8“ has a large circle with a smaller circle on top🧫, how about if you draw them together with your partner? Smaller circle on the inside and the larger one encircling the smaller. And of course in sync📀.
You see, the Art discipline has a little bit of everything – it brings out the dancer in you, challenges your dexterity and grace and can get a bit tricky at times. In short, you are sure to find in it whatever you desire.
And of course a big thanks to Irina! As always it was a great workshop, teaching us a lot beyond techniques and moves and most of all, making it all a lot of fun!
When will we see you at one of our Art workshops? 😊
